Everywhere we turn, we hear about GMO’s. It’s all over the media; there are protests and documentaries, studies and papers. There is a lot of information available, and at times it can be overwhelming and confusing. But it’s crucial that we pay attention as we are faced with an issue that is of great concern and the only way to guard against the dangers, is to learn as much as we can so that we can make better and more informed decisions which will ultimately benefit our health and the health of our children.

For weeks now I’ve been trying to compare conventional (chemical) sunscreens to natural sunscreens but I’ve come up against a bit of a barrier. Certain manufacturers of conventional sunscreens won’t provide me with a full list of the ingredients in their product, for example Coles. It seems they don’t have to either, because sunscreens with a SPF of 30 or more are classed as a medicine (a Therapeutic Good) – they legally only need to label the product with the active ingredients and preservatives. Is this not madness?!

You know that feeling when you feel physically uncomfortable, bloated, perhaps even sick to your stomach. You’ve overeaten again! Now you feel crappy. Guilty. Regretful. Annoyed. And a little angry. Why do you keep doing this? At the time you justify it to yourself, you’ve had a hard week, you deserve this, it’s your chance to unwind. You get to a point, eventually, where you’ve had enough. The joys of indulging and eating anything you want no longer outweigh the sick, bloating, yucky feeling you have afterwards.

What do some of the Conventional and so called “Organic” products contain that Certified Organic products don’t? Most conventional skin, personal and hair care products contain TEAs, DEAs, Sulfates, Glycols, Parabens, Synthetic and Artificial ingredients, Ethoxylates, Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde derivatives. A large number of toothpastes & mouthwashes contain Aspartame & Triclosan. Research is showing that health issues from these chemicals are infertility, eczema, cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects & reproductive issues.

It’s no wonder why millions of people from all around the world opt for online courses. Online learning has to be the greatest revolution in contemporary education, as it can make a huge improvement in peoples lives, opening up great opportunities for everyone who wants to learn something. With online learning, otherwise known as e-learning, you not only learn from the comfort and privacy of your own home, but you also get the flexibility of setting your own study schedule to fit your needs (to some extent at least).

As a Naturopath & Nutritionist I spend a large amount of time educating my clients and readers on how to make better diet and lifestyle decisions. Education is such a powerful tool when it comes to improving your health. Information empowers us through choice. We live in a world where we expect transparency in labelling, especially when it comes to the food and supplements we consume on a daily basis. This is why I’d love to share with you some surprising places to look for chemical additives in your diet.

The days and weeks following childbirth are a critical phase in the lives of mothers and newborn babies. As a practising naturopath I consider the twelve months following birth as the fourth trimester. If I am fortunate enough to work with a woman when she is considering pregnancy, my thoughts about her preparation go beyond the ability to conceive. Preparation covering pregnancy and postnatal care aims to support a woman from the follicular stage of her egg development to at least the year following the birth of her child.

In my work as a physiotherapist and life coach I see it every day. Someone’s pain gets to the point where they seek help from their doctor and the first (and sometimes only) thing that happens is that anti-inflammatories and pain medication gets handed out like lolly water. When this doesn’t ‘cure’ the pain it’s back to the doctor – and the cycle continues without any consideration to the harmful side effects these drugs have on the body. Now don’t get me wrong! I strongly believe there is a time and place for such medications.

Why do we spend such a crazy amount of time worrying about things? Small things, big things, imagined things, anything? If our anxiety paid dividends, fine, but in most cases it only serves to heighten stress levels, and dilute our confidence, courage and performance quality. Some worry of course, is realistic and useful, but the majority of our anxious thoughts create wasted nervous energy that’s based on long honed habits of negative thinking- on hypothetical, unrealistic what-ifs, and they can nip away at our ‘joie de vivre’ on a regular basis.

So you’ve jumped on the health train, started drinking broth, cut grains and dairy out, but you still have symptoms that make you think something still isn’t quite right with your food choices. Everything we eat can elicit a positive or negative reaction in the body. If you are intolerant to a certain food and you continue to eat it, your body will react negatively. It doesn’t matter how ‘healthy’ or ‘unhealthy’ it is. The question then begs, what exactly is a food intolerance? And how does this affect my immune system?

A common belief is that most of the illnesses, weight problems, tiredness and disease we suffer in life are somehow ‘genetic’ or ‘bad luck’. Yes, your genes have an influence on your health and longevity, but most of your health profile (your body weight, energy, skin health and disease-risk) is triggered by the composition of your daily food and lifestyle choices. The single most basic measure of human evolution and advancement is healthy life expectancy.

It takes two to tango but why is it that male fertility issues get swept under the rug. Even the procedure of donating sperm, has a certain ‘ease’ expectation, men are asked to go into a room, commit to their business and deliver with little or no question about how they feel or what they are contributing to. All, with further expectations that their sperm, regardless of quality, will contribute to the bundle of bouncing joy. I hate to put a dampener on it but conception is a two way street, in fact 50:50.

As a Naturopath I am often asked about my opinion on Genetically Modified food. Is it safe? Are there any long-term benefits? In my opinion the answer to both of those questions is a resounding no! My philosophy as a health food practitioner is in whole foods, I believe food should be enjoyed in its most natural state possible. Tampering with genes and cross mixing different species of plant families can’t be done without implications.

It’s February, which means many of you are probably embarking on some sort of “detox”, right? That’s great! However, and I hate to be the health Grinch here, unfortunately I bet most of you are doing it wrong. How so? Well let’s first get something straight…. Detoxification is not something you decide to do by going on some sort of juice fast/lemon cleanse/breatharian diet at a given point in the year after partying too much. Detoxification is an ongoing process in your body.

It can be confusing and hard to decipher, figuring out if a personal care product has any nasties in it. It may not have parabens, SLS or EDTA in the product and with that written all over the front of the label you might assume that the rest of the ingredients are good too. I was looking at the Thankyou Body Wash recently and on the front of the label it says “No SLS, SLES, EDTA or Parabens”. It also says “Give your skin a bit of TLC with this fresh and fragrant plant-based body wash that contains ingredients derived from…

It’s a term you’ve probably seen on the back of a food packet or supplement jar, but what is Folic Acid? Quite simply it’s a synthetic B vitamin created to mimic the naturally occurring Folate. Folate occurs naturally in green leafy vegetables and legumes and it is hugely important for a number of processes in the human body, but it’s most famous for its use in the development of healthy babies. Inadequate levels of folate can lead to big problems for unborn children such as malformation of the neural tube which is implicated in spina bifida and incomplete formation of the brain (anencephaly).
